He's young, he's cute, and he has got quite a bit of talent---RKZ stepped onto the Urban Desi music scene this summer and has been working hard on his music ever since. We've heard three songs and seen two videos already, all of which we have enjoyed. "Mr. Entertainer" is RKZ's mixtape and its video had hot graphics and electrifying colors. With so much going on we were able to catch up with RKZ and here's the low down on all that he has been up to!
DH: For those who don't know you, who is RKZ?
RKZ: I am a singer/songwriter/rapper/DJ. 19 [years old], from Luton, but I am currently living in London.
DH: Being only 19 years old, are you studying as well as working on your musical career?
RKZ: Yes, I am studying music as well at Westminister.
DH: What inspired you to get into music?
RKZ: I was always into music when I was young because everyone around me like my mum, my dad, and my sister all sing as well. I just literally fell into it because a few of mates around me as well started doing various things such as deejaying, singing, and writing music, so I followed trend and the next thing I know I am recording songs needlessly. I just carried on with it.
DH: Who inspired you musically?
RKZ: Growing up, I listened to a lot of Most Def, Bob Marley, Rat Pack, De La Soul. Kind of old school vibes. Recently I have been listening to a lot more Nate James, he's from the U.K. A lot of that kind of neo-soul, random artists.
DH: No Desi music?
RKZ: I can't really say that I was into Desi music when I was young. I have kind of gotten into it the last few years because I got into deejaying. We do a lot of Bhangra tracks, just stuff like that. But I would say apart from Sonu Niigaam, A.R. Rahman obviously, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, there hasn't really been that many that have caught my eye. Mind you, saying that, I do love the musical inspiration that Prabu Deva has got, the dancer. He had inspired me to do a lot of theatric based stuff in my music.
DH: What are you working on apart from "Mr. Entertainer?"
RKZ: "Mr. Entertainer" mixtape was just released a little while ago. Currently, I am in the process of putting together another mixtape. The main thing I am doing right now is just working with people and trying to get some new things done.
DH: How did you and Bharat Goel meet?
RKZ: He was studying at my uni and it was by chance that we happened to meet. We kinda got talking for a couple of weeks and then he brought me into the studio to listen to a project that he did for his final degree, which happened to be his "Gendha Phool" remix. At that point it was quite raw and I told him 'this song is really good, but I think if you got someone rapping on it, then it might give it an edge.' He wasn't gonna do it and leave it as it was. I got a call back a week after that, [Bharat Goel said] 'I am having second thoughts, do you wanna jump in on it?' And I thought 'ok.' It turned out we worked out quite well together and we got straight to work on another one and hopefully we should be doing a lot more.
DH: When it comes to your lyrics, who writes them?
RKZ: I write all my lyrics!
DH: Who would be your dream collaborators?
RKZ: Des-C, I have done a few shows with him, he is the one that stands out on the scene. Drake for a mainstream artist just because he is everywhere right now. I would love to work with Lady GaGa, that would be crazy.
DH: Enough about music...are you single? What do you look for in a girl?
RKZ: Yes. I look for someone that is very easy going and laid back. Also have similar tastes as me because I can be very set in my ways when it comes to music and sports and stuff. Generally, I'm not really too fussed. I don't intend to meet someone with set attributes that I require, as long as they get where I come from and what I believe in, that's pretty cool.
DH: Who is the hottest Bollywood babe?
RKZ: Deepika [Padokune], I saw her in "Om Shanti Om." Back in the day, Aishwariya Rai and Karishma Kapoor.
DH: Fav Food?
RKZ: A bit of everything. I like experimenting.
DH: Fav Color?
RKZ: Red
DH: What are you listening to now a days?
RKZ: a lot of dub step!
DH: Fav movie?
RKZ: Most recently "Ray" with Jamie Fox.
DH: Do you have a final message for our readers?
RKZ: Keep following, keep supporting; artists need their fans to do music, keep your eyes open for me!
RKZ is working on his next mixtape which he hopes to release in March 2010. Until then keep it locked to Desi Hits! for updates. Have you heard RKZ's songs "Mr. Entertainer," "Genda Phool," or "Kuke Kuke?" What did you think? Leave us all your thoughts below!
