How To Get Rid Of Yeast Infections During Pregnancy

Getting yeast infections during pregnancy is very common for expecting women, whether they've had a history of yeast infections or not. This is caused by an excessive amount of Candida in the system, coupled by a weakened immune system during pregnancy. Fortunately, it's usually harmless for your baby.

A baby that develops while you have a yeast infection is usually completely unaffected. The baby is separated by the uterus and only connected by the placenta, through which yeast fungus cannot flow. This insulates the baby from harm by the yeast.

Even if your baby was born while you still had a yeast infection, your baby would still be safe. The worst case scenario is that your baby develops a yeast infection in the mouth, which would disappear in a week or so. Even babies who are born to mothers who didn't have a yeast infection during pregnancy sometimes get oral yeast infections.

The first step to getting rid of a yeast infection during pregnancy is to consult your doctor. Although there are typical household cures for yeast infections, such as plain yogurt, ginger suppositories, or anti-fungus juice blends, you should do without these for now.

Also on the list to avoid are over the counter drugs. While these are effective, they can also completely kill the "good bacteria" which regulates Candida in your body, especially with a weakened immune system. Some of these drugs can also travel across the placenta and increase the risk of birth defects or complications.

Yeast infections during pregnancy can sometimes be a mis-diagnosis of a more serious issue. Genital warts, for example, has many of the same exterior symptoms as a yeast infection during pregnancy, but should be diagnosed early, before labor. Therefore, it's a good idea to consult your doctor if you think you have a yeast infection.
